1.What is
a top level domain?
Top level
domain's are the rightmost part of a domain name. For example,
com, edu, net, org, gov, mil, int are some of the most commonly
used top level domains. Seven more such top level domains are

2.Who
assign's these top level domains ?
Top level
domains are assigned by the "Internet Corporation for Assigned
Names and Numbers" (ICANN).
It is a non-profit corporation formed to assume responsibility
for the IP address space allocation, protocol parameter
assignment, domain name system management, and root server
system management. Previously this task was assigned to IANA
(Internet assigned number authority) . Board of ICANN is
composed of nineteen Directors. A part of those directors were
selected according to a vote of internet users worldwide.
3.What is
a ccTLD ( Country code top level domain) ?
A top level
domain is assigned for every country in the world. For example .uk,
.jp , .bd , .au are the ccTLD of United Kingdom, Japan,
Bangladesh and Australia respectively. [ccTLD
list] . A two letter country code specified by the
ISO 3166-1 standard is used for this purpose. These codes
are used for other purpose also.
4.Who
controls the .bd domain?
Ministry of
Post and Telecommunication, Government of the Peoples Republic
of Bangladesh , is the Administrative authority of .bd ccTLD .
5.How can
I register a domain under .bd?
"Application
form" and a ".bd registration agreement" should be filled up,
signed and sent to The Office of "Divisional Engineer" , Telex
and Teleprinter Division, 4th Floor, Mogbazar Telephone Bhaban,
Dhaka. A "Demand note" will be issued, clearly mentioning the
amount to be paid. Paid copy of the demand note should be
returned to the same office that issued the demand note.
6.Where
can I get the application form?
Application and
agreement forms can be downloaded or can be collected from
The Office of "Divisional Engineer" , Telex and Teleprinter
Division, 4th Floor, Mogbazar Telephone Bhaban, Dhaka.
7.Can I
apply online?
No, not for
the time being.
8.What are
the charges?
Registration
fee and service charge for two years is 1500/= Tk and yearly
charge is 500/= Tk. So, for the first year 1500/= Tk has to be
paid and 500/= Tk for each following years after first two
years.
9.Are
these charges comparable to other Asian countries?
Yes, it is.
For example, in India you have to pay 100$US as application fee
and 50$US as yearly charge to be paid through "Demand draft/Pay
Order" only , in Srilanka Application fee is RS-5000/= for two
years and Maintenance fee is RS-5000/= for two years , to be
"paid in check", in Pakistan registration fee is Rs-100/= per
year, in Malaysia Registration fee is RM-100/= per year and
Renewal fee is RM-100/= per year. Among these countries, only
Pakistan provides on line registration, but to do that a special
pre-paid "Domain fee card" has to be used.
10.Can I
register a domain directly under .bd?
No, a domain
directly under .bd is not allowed. For example "abc.bd" for a
certain company "abc" is not allowed. But a domain of the form "abc.com.bd"
or "abc.net.bd" is valid.
11.What
are the available .bd sub domains?
Presently
com, edu, net, gov, org, mil sub domains are available. But "gov"
and "mil" sub domains are reserved for "Government" and "Defence"
organizations respectively. Registration of domains under such
domains should be initiated by appropriate authority.
12. Is
there any restriction in domain name selection?
You can
select any name other than generic terms, name of professions ,
services, products, sports etc. as a domain name. For example,
"Doctor." , "Lawyer", "Rice", "School" etc. are not acceptable.
Any domain name offending our, social practices, culture,
religions, respected personalities will not be accepted.
13.Do I
get a free IP with domain registration?
No, providing
IP is not relevant to domain registration service.
14.What
are the information that I must provide in the application form?
Name and IP
address of Primary and Secondary "Domain name server", name
and address of the "Technical" and "Administrative" contact
person of your domain.
15.Why I
must provide the name of at least one name server and its IP?
Domain names
are held in a distributed database. Your "Domain name server"
holds the name and IP address of all the machines in your
domain. Whenever any machine in the internet tries to locate a
machine in your domain,( that is under .bd domain ), the request
is first forwarded to .bd name server. The .bd name server than
looks up the name of your domain's name server in its database.
Then it responds mentioning the name of your "Domain name serve"
as the ultimate authority to give that information. Your "Domain
name server" is than queried about that machine and the IP
address is obtained from it.
16.How
can I check that the information I provided were entered
properly?
Network
utility tools like "nslookup" or "dig" can be used for this
purpose, making .bd Domain name server "dns.bd" as the default
server.
17.How can
I change the registered domain related information( DNS name,
IP)?
Changes in
information should be conveyed in written form to the Data and
Internet Division, Mogbazar Telephone Bhaban, Mogbazar, Contact
Phone:880-2-8319825. It should be signed by administrative
contact of the domain.
18.Why do
I have to mention "Administrative contact" and "Technical
contact" ?
It is a
general practice to separate two types of activities associated
with the control of a domain. "Administrative contact" is the
ultimate authority of a domain. "Technical contact" deals with
the technical aspects of that domain.
